The Tommy Bishop Shield returned in 2022 after a Covid hiatus as 25 Under 8s teams from across the greater Sydney basin descended on Blaxland Reserve, home of Aquinas Colts JRLFC.
In what initially started out as a cold dry day, it seemed somewhat fitting that the final day of Rugby League on the Cronulla JRL calendar was affected by the rain, a reminder of the battles we have had with the record-breaking rain that has been persistent throughout the 2022 season.
Despite the rain, close to 300 boys and girls participated in pool matches during the morning to then be seeded into the 4 divisions – Pepsi Cup, Caltex Plate, Endeavour Cup and Tommy Bishop Shield. Teams from Cronulla JRL (Gymea Gorillas, Aquinas Colts, Taren Point Titans and De La Salle), Penrith JRL (Minchinbury Jets), Group 6 JRL (Oran Park Chargers), North Sydney JRL (Willoughby Roos), Manly JRL (Manly Brothers) were represented across the 4 division Grand Finals, with results:
Pepsi Cup: Oran Park Chargers 12 def. Willoughby Roos 8
Caltex Cup: Gymea Gorillas 20 def. Aquinas Colts 4
Endeavour Cup: Minchinbury Jets 24 def. Taren Point Titans 8
Tommy Bishop Shield: De La Salle 16 deft. Manly Brothers 8
These days cannot happen without the generous help of many people – a very special thank you to Aquinas Colts for hosting the day, Cronulla Sutherland Referees Association for supplying referees throughout the day, Cronulla JRL volunteers and NSWRL staff for Ground Managing games as well as all the players and team staff who braved the wintery conditions to put on a show and the parents and families supporting the players across the day.
