Crocs Celebrate Indigenous Round

Last Saturday the Como Jannali JRLFC hosted its annual Indigenous Round to celebrate the end of NAIDOC week. Wearing special jerseys it also served to celebrate and recognise the contribution of the 50 plus indigenous team members who are a proud and integral part of the fabric which makes up the Como Crocs club.

The kids performed their own dance, inspired by the Emu and lead by Dean McKewin, Tamika Fitzgerald, Glen Mitchell and Jai McKewin. This was accompanied by Damo John and Wayne Viser on the didgeridoo and clapsticks.

Local elder Aunty Deana Schreiber performed a welcome to country and Uncle Col Hardy entertained the crowd with his rendition of the Seekers ‘We Are Australian’ prior to kick-off of the Open Gold match between the Crocs and the Aquinas Colts.

The stars of the show were without a doubt the kids, who proudly performed in front of the sizeable crowd at Sutherland Oval and who clearly showed how proud they were of their culture expressed throughout the performance.

The Como Crocs who currently sit 3rd on the competition ladder put on solid display to prevail against 5th place Colts, 26-10.

The Cronulla Sutherland District Junior Rugby Football League acknowledges the Dharawal speaking people who are the Traditional Custodians of the land of Sutherland Shire and pay respect to their Elders past, present and future.

We acknowledge the stories, traditions and living cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on the lands we meet, gather and play on.
