Shark Attack News - #14

cronullajrl

There was plenty of action and excitement last weekend with the rain clearing for yet another full round of football to be played across the Shire. The Aquinas Colts celebrated being back at Blaxland Oval and we send our deepest condolences to Taren Point and its members upon hearing of the passing of club member Noel Thornberry.

Despite the rain, the annual tribute match to Val Kearns between Engadine and Bosco was played at Anzac Oval with the kids having an absolute ball in the conditions and playing a fantastic match fitting of the occasion. It was a definite highlight of last week's games. See the full report and photo gallery from the match below.

As always, this week's Shark Attack News has the team lists for this weekend's Power Waste Management Gold Cup matches, the players who celebrated milestones, the team and players of the week and much more.

Val Kearns Shield 2024

Rugby league has a proud tradition centered around community and the grass roots level of our great game. It is a community that remembers and recognises not only the greats who play the game but also and more importantly those unsung heroes who get up every weekend to volunteer and contribute to its ongoing success.

Val Kearns was one of those very people, who spent her life contributing to the very fabric that is junior sport and junior rugby league in this country. While the Kearns family legacy includes the likes of Robbie who played at the games highest level, it is the legacy of Val Kearns who was a great mother, supporter, ambassador and volunteer of local junior rugby league for whom this event celebrates and remembers each year.

This year was the 16th anniversary of the Val Kearns Shield between the local under 8's Engadine Dragons and Bosco Bulldogs. It celebrates the life and contribution to junior rugby league by its name sake.

For the first time since the pandemic the match was played at Anzac Oval and for the second year running, Engadine won the shield. As always Mark Kearns was there to talk to both teams and explain the importance of sportsmanship and friendship which is the cornerstone of playing junior rugby league.

The conditions were wet and muddy, but the players had an absolute ball and while Engadine won the match in a tight contest, everyone felt like they were winners on the day. After the match there was a short presentation with all players being awarded medals for participating in what has become an Engadine community tradition honoring the late Val Kearns.
