While the local Junior Rugby League competition takes a break for the ANZAC Day long weekend, there’s no shortage of action for Sharks fans, with a huge Super Sunday set to showcase both community and junior representative rugby league.

Pirates Back in Action

At Sutherland Oval (3:00pm), the Sutherland Loftus Pirates will make their long-awaited return to senior football, taking on the Thirroul Butchers in Round 1 of the Illawarra Harrigan Cup.

The Pirates’ return marks a significant moment for the Shire, built on a collaboration between the Cronulla Sutherland Sharks, Newtown Jets, and Cronulla Junior Rugby League to provide a genuine local senior pathway.

It shapes as a strong Cronulla-based side stepping onto the field to test themselves against Illawarra opposition — and a great opportunity for the local community to get behind the team from day one.

Tarsha Gale Sharks One Win from Grand Final

Earlier in the day, attention turns to Leichhardt Oval (2:30pm), where the Sharks Tarsha Gale Cup team will take on the Newcastle Knights in a Preliminary Final with a Grand Final berth on the line.

The Sharks earned their place in the final four after a standout 20–18 upset over the minor premiers Sydney Roosters, a result that highlighted their ability to perform under pressure.

Their opponents, the Knights, come into the clash in strong form after progressing through the finals, setting up a high-quality showdown between two well-matched sides.

There is added storyline around the clash, with several Sharks players — including captain Koffi Brookfield — chasing back-to-back success after last year’s Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership Grand Final victory, which also came against Newcastle.

Under the guidance of coach Andrew Fifita, the Sharks have developed into a cohesive and resilient unit, one that has already proven it can rise to the occasion — and now sits just one win away from a Grand Final appearance.

With local pride and finals dreams both on the line, Sunday shapes as a huge day for rugby league in the Shire.

Support the Pirates at Sutherland Oval, follow the Tarsha Gale girls at Leichhardt Oval, and get behind the next generation of Sharks.

Super Sunday is here — don’t miss it. ⚫⚪🔵
