SG Ball Sharks dominate Bunnies while the Matthews Cup Sharks steal a draw

The SG Ball Sharks kept their finals hopes alive with a win over Souths at their last start, while a drawn result for the Matthews Cup team, in a game where they came from 18-0 down to share the points with the Rabbitohs, saw them slip to sixth position with the junior representative season approaching the business end.

In last weekend’s SG Ball clash the Sharks fell behind 10-0 early, but from that point controlled the ball and therefore also the scoreboard, the under-19 Cronulla team scoring six tries in a 32-16 triumph.

Big front rower Felix Faatili, who has made a habit of scoring tries for the Ball Sharks this season, crossed twice in the win.

With the win the Sharks moved to seventh on the SG Ball ladder, just two points behind the fourth placed Eels, making the game on Saturday crucial to the Finals chances of both teams.

While the Matthews Cup Sharks will have the opportunity to rest up and recover with a round six bye, after escaping with one competition point following an 18-all draw against Souths last weekend.

The Sharks were their own worst enemies in the first half against the Rabbitohs, falling behind 12-0 at the break, before another Souths try in the opening minutes of the second period made it 18-0 to the visitors and the Cronulla team had it all to do.

Showing admirable resilience, the Sharks battled back, three tries in the final 15 minutes, the last four pointer from Oliver Lester and Nikora Williams conversion levelling the score with time running out.

The round six SG Ball match between the Sharks and Eels is scheduled for an 11.30am kick off at New Era Stadium on Saturday, with their team listed below.

SG BALL SHARKS 32 Felix Faatili 2, Richard Whalebone, Luke Raymond, Samuel McCulloch, Dylan Christensen tries, Bryce Sait 4 goals beat SOUTHS 16

MATTHEWS CUP SHARKS 18 Thomas WISEMAN, Thomas DELLOW, Oliver LESTER tries, Nikora WILLIAMS 3 goals drew with SOUTHS 18
