The Sharks’ opening week of the NSWRL Junior Representative Finals delivered both heartbreak and triumph, with the club’s two female teams producing contrasting results at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday, April 11.
Lisa Fiaola Cup
The Lisa Fiaola Sharks saw their season come to a heartbreaking end, going down 27–26 in a thrilling elimination final.
In one of the games of the finals series, the Sharks came out with intent, dominating the opening half and crossing right on halftime to take a deserved 20–12 lead into the break. Their energy and physicality set the tone early, showcasing the growth of the side across the season.
The second half turned into a brutal arm wrestle, with the opposition lifting in intensity and gradually working their way back into the contest. With just five minutes remaining, the scores were locked at 26–26 before a late field goal proved the difference.
Despite a courageous effort to respond, the Sharks were unable to regain field position in the closing stages, falling just short in a match defined by effort, resilience and determination.
While the result ends their campaign, it was a performance full of character — one that reflects a season of outstanding progress for this group of talented girls.
Tarsha Gale Cup
In contrast, the Tarsha Gale Sharks produced one of their best performances of the season, defeating the minor premiers 20–18 in a gripping qualifying final.
The Sharks made a strong start, crossing for two early tries before the Roosters responded to level the scores. Cronulla regained the advantage to head into halftime in front, setting up a tense second half.
The contest tightened after the break, with momentum swinging between both sides. After the Roosters edged ahead, the Sharks responded through a crucial try to reclaim the lead.
From there, the Sharks’ defence held firm under sustained pressure in the closing minutes, withstanding multiple attacking sets to secure a memorable finals victory.
The result sees the Sharks earn a week off and move to within one win of a Grand Final appearance.
With one team’s season ending in heartbreaking fashion and the other advancing deeper into the finals series, it was a day that captured the highs and lows of knockout football — and highlighted the strength of the Sharks’ female pathways program. ⚫⚪🔵
